Happy Sunday — and if it's pouring where you are, this one's for you. The hardest days aren't the busy ones; they're the ones where a wound-up kid is stuck inside with nowhere to put their energy. So this week is the Indoor Olympics: noisy, sweaty, gloriously physical games that fit in a living room. Push the coffee table back and let the games begin.

🧦 1. Sock skee-ball

Roll a pile of socks into balls. Set out a laundry basket, a mixing bowl, and a saucepan at different distances and assign each a point value — the farthest pot is worth the most. Take turns lobbing socks and tally the score. It's quiet enough for an apartment, it self-scores (older kids love being the referee), and the ammo is free and harmless. Cleanup: you were going to fold those socks anyway. For a rowdier version, a couple of foam balls bounce satisfyingly and won't dent a lamp.

🌋 2. The floor is lava

Lay out couch cushions, pillows, and towels as "islands" across the floor. The rule writes itself: touch the carpet and you "melt" (dramatically — the melting is the best part). Make it a course from the couch to the kitchen, then time each run and try to beat it. For toddlers, keep the islands close together and hold a hand. Cleanup: restack the cushions, which somehow becomes its own game. Zero equipment, endless replay.

🎈 3. Balloon keep-up

Blow up one balloon. The entire goal: don't let it touch the floor. That's it — and it will absorb a startling amount of energy because a balloon falls slowly, so even an uncoordinated three-year-old can keep the rally going and feel like a champion. Add rules as they master it: only feet, only heads, count the streak out loud. Cleanup: none, but a safety note — pop a balloon and pocket the pieces immediately; popped balloon scraps are a real choking hazard for the under-threes, so this is a supervised game. A bag of assorted balloons keeps the league running all season.

🏅 Two more for the podium

4. Pillow long jump. Mark a takeoff line with tape, jump, and put a pillow where they land. Next jump has to beat the pillow. Measuring the distance with footsteps sneaks in some counting.

5. Animal-walk relay. Bear crawl to the wall, crab walk back, hop like a frog to the couch. Call out the next animal as they go. It's a workout disguised as silliness, and it tires them out faster than anything else on this list.

🃏 In your back pocket

  • Freeze dance: music on, dance; music off, freeze. The oldest trick, still undefeated.
  • Tape balance beam: a long strip of painter's tape on the floor is a tightrope. Arms out, heel to toe, don't fall in the "water."

🌱 One tip for the grown-up

Give the wiggles a finish line. A wound-up kid isn't being difficult — they have energy and no plan for it. Three rounds of sock skee-ball with a clear "last one!" drains the tank and ends cleanly, which beats an open-ended romp that spirals into overtired tears. Big movement first, then they'll actually settle for the quiet thing afterward.

When the storm passes, edition 3's nature hunts are waiting.
